'I am responsible for my attidudes and actions'

Galatians 6:5 Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Self-honesty and self-examination lifts us away from a destructive dependence on the approval of others. Through the process of recovery we are enabled to move toward a healthy, new sense of responsibility as each of us begins to "take responsibilty for doing the best we can with our lives".

Responsible people:

- Admit their wrongs.
- Plan for the future.
- Know their abilities and limitations.

'Got does not tempt us'

Matthew 26:41 Stay alert; be in prayer so you don't wander into temptation without even knowing you're in danger. There is a part of you that is eager, ready for anything in God. But there's another part that's as lazy as an old dog sleeping by the fire."

Memories of good times we had whilst drinking and drugging is a source of temptation we have to guard against. In our minds we can paint a lovely picture of our drug of choice, in our favourite using space. We may only see the bright odours, warm atmosphere and good companions.

What we can fail to see is the drunk or addict in the corner with no money, no friends and possibly no home. When we participate in binges or sessions and feel good it is easy to forget the mornings after, full of remorse, guilt and arguments.

God is not a tempter, But Satan is! Our own lusts and desires can lead us astray. People will try and entice us often to cover their own addiction and inadequacies. But be sure God is our best safeguard. Not only does He protect us but He also provides us with power to resist, not just once but repeatedly.

Since I gave my life to God I have been aware of His guidance through times of temptation. It is my desire to follow where He leads me instead of following my own fantasies and desires. I know if I trust God today He will not lead me into temptation without providing me what I require to overcome it.

God is always there to help!

Psalm 3: 1-2 Lord, I have so many enemies;so many are against me.So many are saying,“God will never rescue him!”

In the beginning of Psalm 3, David echoes the doubts of others who tease. “God will never rescue him!”

How often have we felt with similar doubts? And how many times in our lives have we questioned, Is there a God, and does He know the things I am facing? Does he care that I am lonely, sick and hurting? When we finally realize that we cannot continue to live with our addictions and compulsions yeat feel we cannot survive without them, are we afraid that we have reached this point alone, alienated from the God?.

Psalm 73:23 says "I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand."

The psalmist was tempted to envy the prosperity of the wicked; a common temptation,to want what others have, which has tested us all. But he lays down the great principle by which he has decided to live. His decision is to live in the goodness of God. This is a truth which cannot be shaken. Good thoughts of God will strengthen us against life's temptations.

Beginning Spiritual Awakening

1 Cor. 15:34 Think straight. Awaken to the holiness of life. No more playing fast and loose with resurrection facts. Ignorance of God is a luxury you can't afford in times like these. Aren't you embarrassed that you've let this kind of thing go on as long as you have?

The church from it's beginning has had as it's goal a spiritual awakening or renewal, through faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to the Holy Spirit.

This is also the goal of the Twelve Steps. The Twelve Steps have at their core the desire to transform the lives of people caught up in addiction and self-destruction. .

This is also the goal of Recovery Church 2 Cor. 5:17 Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it!

Doing the right thing!

I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:18

Most of us life want to do the right thing. But like Paul in the verse above even with good intentions we end up messing up. Recognising this fact is the beginning of our awareness of powerlessness. God can use this recognition as the beginning of the end of the addictive and compulsive behaviours. The first step on our road to Recovery and changed life..

Will you come?

Our reasons for attending Recovery Church will vary.It may be we are caught up in a life of confusion, addiction and compulsion. It may be that we’ve just fought and lost an exhausting battle with alcohol, drugs or some other substance abuse. It may be that we’re new to recovery, and we’re losing the war with our compulsive behaviours. It may be that we’ve been around awhile and have been abstinent, but discovered that our addictions and compulsions have become active in some other area of our lives and forced us to face our powerlessness and our need of God in our lives once again. Not every act of growth is motivated by pain; it may even be simply that it’s time again to evaluate our lives and our futures, beginning a new journey.

What ever the reasons Recovery Church is for everyone - and will benefit those who attend.

Will you come?

Personal Needs

Over the last few weeks I have become more and more involved in things spiritual. As I have the Holy Spirit has prompted me to make sure I take care of my own needs and the needs of my family in order to be fully available to others.

Psalm 104:27-28 All the creatures look expectantly to you to give them their meals on time. You come, and they gather around; you open your hand and they eat from it.

As I live my life and consider all the people dependent on me, for various thing, I realise my life Depends On God. Without Him I would't be here, wouldn't have the beatiful wife and three wonderful children I have. Wouldn't have a God given job working with people in desperate need of personal relationship with Him.

As I consider the last few weeks and my personal needs I am grateful that I have a Saviour, whol loves me unconditionally and supplies all my needs to enable me to complete the tasks He places before me.

Major Nottle Says

The Salvation Army's roots have been deeply embedded in two biblical concepts - Souls and Justice. In other words, wherever you look, The Salvation Army was passionately committed to winning souls and setting the captives free from the effects of injustice - and William Booth's words made it abundantly clear where we should seek those lost souls - "Go for souls", Booth proclaimed, "and go for the worst".

The truth is, and as unpalatable as it might be for some, that The Salvation Army is NOT called to serve, or in fact, be subservient, to the middle or ruling classes. Our manifesto is to go for souls, and go for the worst. Its to loose the cords of justice, to break the yoke of injustice,to feed the hungry, cloth the naked, visit those in prison, befriend the lonely, to seek and save the lost. When we do this, we must always remember the words of Jesus, when He said, when you do these things to the least of these, you do it to me.

The concept of developing a recovery church at 614 rises up from the very heart of the early Salvation Army. But more importantly, it rises up from the very heart of Jesus Himself.

The idea is that a church will commence on Tuesday, April 6th @ 6.30pm at 69 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

It will feature worship which will be provided by people that are seeking healing and victory over their addictions. It will also feature preaching which will be designed to give very practical, but always biblical concepts that will help people have victory over their addictions. We will then meet in support groups to reflect on how we might be able to apply the teachings of Jesus that we have heard during the bible message.

Please cover this initiative with prayer. We are really believing that Jesus will have victory in people's lives, time and time again.
